In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, upgrade materials are super important for making your journey through Thedas a whole lot better. You’ll come across these handy items while exploring, looting chests, or even buying them from merchants. Their main use? Upgrading Rook’s gear and your companions’ equipment to keep you ahead of the curve. Plus, they help boost faction merchants’ shop levels. And here’s the kicker, some of these materials double as currency, so you can trade them for other resources or even snag some extra gold!

Mastering Equipment Upgrades and Progression
In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, leveling up is pretty straightforward, you get stronger as you unlock new skills and snag better gear. Most of the time, the loot you pick up will be a step up from what you're rocking, even if the stats aren't always perfect for your setup. But don’t sweat it if you don’t find the ideal items! You can power up your existing gear and tweak it to boost the stats that suit your playstyle best.
The game offers two primary ways to upgrade equipment: increasing an item’s level or improving its rarity. Both methods will make your gear more powerful, though one has a more noticeable effect. To fully optimize your equipment, it’s best to make use of both systems. Here’s a look at how each upgrade option works.
Increasing an Item’s Level
To level up an item, you’ll first need to unlock the Workshop at your base, the Lighthouse. The Workshop becomes accessible a few hours into the story, so continue progressing, and you’ll reach this point naturally. Once it’s available, talk to the Caretaker to access the equipment upgrade menu. Upgrading an item requires specific materials, such as Flawless Crystals, Imperial Weave, and Pure Ore, with the quantity and type of materials depending on the item’s current level and rarity.
Items begin at level 0 and can be upgraded incrementally up to level 10. However, even if you have the necessary resources, you won’t be able to max out items immediately, as upgrades are limited by the current rank of your Workshop. For example, a Workshop at rank 4 allows you to upgrade items only to level 4. The good news is that even low-level items can be upgraded directly to match your Workshop’s current rank. To further increase the Workshop rank, you’ll need to collect Mementos through exploration; once you gather enough, you’ll be notified to return to base and upgrade the Workshop.
