What’s the Solution to the Gallows Puzzle in the Yard in Silent Hill 2?
Once you’ve gathered all the weights in Toluca Prison, the Gallows will appear behind the Scales in the Yard. To proceed, you’ll need the Execution Lever, which is obtained by positioning the weights on the Scales so the dial points directly toward the sword.
After inserting the Execution Lever into the Gallows’ slot, two doors will open in front of you, revealing six incomplete poems. The first half of each poem is fixed on the Gallows, and your task is to correctly match the second half by cross-referencing. However, there are two possible correct verses for each poem, and the set you get will be random. Below, we’ll list the first half of each poem along with the starting line of the two correct responses. You’ll need to choose the correct response from the set given to you.
part 1
Poem:
- For your grace I do not plead,
- For the flames I did set free,
- Sisters shrieked and children cried,
- No one made it out alive.
Correct answers:
- "Though the young ones' deaths I mourn"
- "I watched them burn"
part 2
Poem:
- The wealth of others I did take,
- The seventh statue I did break,
- And yet my deeds I don't regret,
- I had my reasons, that is that.
Correct answers:
- "The reason, I have to say"
- "What were those reasons, you might ask"
part 3
Poem:
- I took the child, you are quite right,
- Carried her off into the night,
- She did not scream, she did not bawl,
- I was her father, after all.
Correct answers:
- "My only daughter, joy of days"
- "Forgive me child, for I have failed"
part 4
Poem:
- Once the sun has ceased its reign,
- I cut through the rusty chain,
- Pushed the door and snuck within,
- Filled my pockets to the brim.
Correct answers:
- "I departed with great haste"
- "So, my guilt is plain to see"
part 5
Poem:
- Mommy dearest, mommy sweet,
- Your love for me was so deep,
- "Why, oh, why?" you shouted,
- When my knife pierced through your heart.
Correct answers:
- "You were, oh, so, kind to me"
- "You broke my legs, I couldn't walk"
part 6
Poem:
- I waited long, I bid my time,
- I waited to commit my crime,
- The man appeared, he saw me not,
- A bloody end is what he got.
Correct answers:
- "In truth, I did not hesitate"
- "In truth, he was less man than beast"
Solving the Puzzle
Once you’ve correctly matched all the verses, ropes will hang from each side of the Gallows. You’ll need to select the rope corresponding to the poem that describes the most unjustifiable crime—the one without any form of defense or reasoning. For example, if a poem shows someone acting out of self-defense, that’s not the right answer. In our case, V was the correct answer.
If you pull the wrong rope, James will fall into a pit full of enemies. You can climb the ladder to escape and return to the Yard to try again. After pulling the correct rope, a longer cutscene will play, allowing you to progress to the Labyrinth.
This marks the end of the Gallows Puzzle, and you can now move deeper into the dark secrets of Silent Hill 2.
