Gears of War 6 Almost Went to Space, Says Former Coalition Head
Imagine Gears of War 6 exploring the galaxy! According to Rod Fergusson, former head of The Coalition, the team once considered taking Gears 6 beyond Sera’s atmosphere. During an interview on IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, Fergusson—now with the Diablo series—shared that his vision for Gears 6 involved venturing off Sera to see how the Gears universe might interact with other parts of the galaxy, or at least the solar system.
However, this wasn’t about turning Gears into another Mass Effect; instead, it was simply about raising the stakes with a new frontier. Gears 5 hinted at old technology capable of leaving Sera, laying a foundation for the idea without interplanetary travel. Fergusson mentioned he even sketched out a story outline before leaving for Activision, though he acknowledged The Coalition might take a different direction.
Currently, The Coalition is focusing on Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel set 14 years before the original game, showcasing a young Marcus Fenix during Emergence Day. Fergusson calls this choice “smart,” especially with the challenge of storytelling without the iconic Lancer weapon.
Gears of War: E-Day doesn’t have a release date yet, but fans can look forward to diving into the origins of Marcus Fenix’s fight against the Locust.
