Star Wars Outlaws: Creative Director Promises Significant Enhancements
Ubisoft has unveiled its first developer update for Star Wars Outlaws, with Drew Rechner, the newly appointed creative director, pledging transformative changes following the game's underwhelming initial sales.
Rechner shared in the update that Ubisoft has been “collecting and implementing player feedback” since launch, pinpointing several critical areas where the game experience can be "enhanced to align better with player expectations."
While such updates are common after challenging game launches, Star Wars Outlaws initially received positive reviews. However, sluggish sales impacted Ubisoft’s already vulnerable position, prompting efforts to boost performance ahead of the game's Steam release and the upcoming holiday season.
The planned changes focus on refining combat, stealth, and controls. “Our first priority for improvement is in combat, where we see potential to bring added depth and excitement, rewarding player strategy and precision,” Rechner explained.
“The second focus is on stealth, aiming to improve the predictability and clarity of enemy detection while allowing players more flexibility in how they handle encounters.”
Lastly, character controls will be revamped for smoother gameplay, including more reliable cover mechanics and responsive climbing and crouching actions, ensuring overall consistency and precision.
These updates are expected to roll out with Update 1.4 on November 21, coinciding with the game’s Steam release. More details on these enhancements will be shared in the coming weeks.
October’s Update 1.3 already introduced major improvements, especially in stealth mechanics, giving players “more freedom in their approach” and enhancing enemy behavior to create a more immersive experience.
Rechner steps into his role as creative director after Julian Gerighty, the previous director, shifted his focus to The Division 3 at Massive Entertainment.
Amid these changes, Ubisoft faces ongoing challenges, including acquisition rumors and other operational issues. The company recently postponed Assassin’s Creed Shadows to 2025 and ended its exclusivity with the Epic Games Store for PC games.
