The layout of Chapter 3 can be somewhat of a labyrinth at times, but our map will help keep you oriented. Don’t hesitate to refer back to it if you feel lost.
1. Black Myth Wukong Chapter 3, Snowhill Path, Path to Progress
Snowhill Path: Frost-Clad Path
Chapter 3 begins in a cave at the entrance to Snowhill Path. After exiting, you'll find yourself at the "Frost-Clad Path" Keeper's Shrine. Proceed up the snowy mountain, engaging in battles with various frozen enemies as you ascend. Eventually, you'll reach a clearing where you're challenged by Macaque Chief, marking the first boss encounter of the chapter.
The first fight with Macaque Chief serves as a warm-up for the upcoming challenges in Chapter 3. After defeating him, continue climbing until you reach a temple complex filled with Frozen Corpses. Once you've cleared the area, approach the tree in the center of the frozen lake. Here, you'll meet the Keeper of the New West, who transforms you into a bat and leads you to the next stage of the adventure.
Snowhill Path: Mirrormere, Black Myth Wukong Chapter 3
After enjoying some beautiful scenery, your character, the Destined One, will arrive at a frozen lake. Save your progress at the "Mirrormere" Shrine and explore the surrounding area. You'll find the first Meditation Spot of Chapter 3, called The Shade, located next to a large tree by the lake. When you're ready to face your next challenge, step onto the frozen lake to initiate the boss battle against Kang-Jin Loong.
The fight with Kang-Jin Loong is a test of patience, as she frequently dodges your attacks by taking to the skies, while summoning lightning bolts to strike down at you. Timing your attacks carefully is key, especially when she slams her tail into the lake, providing an opportunity for you to strike. Using Immobilize, along with powerful moves like Charged Pillar and Thrust Stance on her head, can help you deal significant damage and eventually bring her down.
2. Pagoda Realm Walkthrough
Pagoda Realm: Lower Pagoda
After defeating Kang-Jin Loong, you’ll awaken in the Pagoda Realm, a multi-tiered prison that is one of the most challenging areas in the game. This area features a unique debuff mechanic:
- Every three minutes, chants from the central pagoda create a curse that halves your maximum health. A grey haze will signal this effect.
- During the curse, Lantern Wardens appear on the ledges, and all enemies receive a damage boost. Enemies and your character’s eyes will glow red, making targeting easier, but enemies hit harder, making survival difficult.
- The curse lasts for one and a half minutes, after which the timer resets for the next curse cycle.
You may find yourself dying frequently in this area due to the curse, narrow pathways, and enemies knocking you off platforms. Cyan Bats can be particularly troublesome, swooping down from above. You’ll also notice purple seals blocking certain doors; remember their locations, as you will unlock them after defeating Captain Lotus-Vision.
To begin, exit your cell and head left along the ledge until you reach the "Lower Pagoda" Keeper's Shrine. Follow the tunnel through a nearby cell until you emerge outside again. Continue along the ledge until you find an alcove with a lantern marking a stairway to the upper levels.
Proceed up the stairs, exit the cell, and cross a wooden beam (beware of the Yaksha Archer on the other side). Enter the alcove on the right, move forward, and climb another set of stairs to reach the "Upper Pagoda" Shrine.
Pagoda Realm: Upper Pagoda
The "Upper Pagoda" Shrine is located near a pit filled with stone figures, where Captain Lotus-Vision awaits. To fight him and break the purple seals, carefully jump onto the rooftops that lead into the pit.
Captain Lotus-Vision specializes in shooting small projectiles and larger energy beams. Use your staff's spinning move to deflect the smaller projectiles, and be prepared to roll away from the larger blasts. As his health decreases, he’ll unleash beams across the arena, which you can dodge by hiding behind pillars.
After defeating him, return to explore the newly unlocked purple-sealed doors. Inside, you’ll find crafting materials and Will, but the most valuable item is the Ashen Slumber Transformation, which allows you to transform into a two-headed rat and unleash the powerful Fiery Burst spell.
Your actions in Chapter 2 will determine what you find:
- If you fought the two-headed Rat Captains in Sandgate Village and listened to the NPCs in the hut, you’ll find a dead rat with a blade, granting you the transformation.
- If you skipped the Rat Captains and dialogue, you’ll face a Rat Captain boss in one of the cells, and defeating him will earn you the blade and transformation.
Once you’ve explored the area, head back to the "Upper Pagoda" Shrine and continue along the platforms until you reach more wooden beams. Climb the stairs marked by lanterns to reach the topmost level of the Pagoda Realm. Keep moving forward over broken platforms until you reach the peak of the prison, where you’ll find the next save point.
Pagoda Realm: Mani Wheel
Rest at the "Mani Wheel" Shrine to prepare yourself for the upcoming challenge. When you’re ready, climb the rocks leading to the top of the Pagoda Realm’s panopticon, where you’ll face Captain Wise-Voice, a massive Yaoguai King whose immense size takes up the entire screen. Focus on attacking his leg until he topples, then use Immobilize to expose his weak point, a yellow core in his head, which you should strike repeatedly.
Captain Wise-Voice’s attacks are primarily lightning-based, and halfway through the fight, he will unleash long-range beams while targeting specific floor spots with electric bursts. Watch the floor patterns carefully and roll at the right moment to avoid damage. Once you bring him down, you can breathe easy, as you’ve conquered one of the toughest parts of the Pagoda Realm. Exit through the opposite side of the arena.
Pagoda Realm: Outside the Wheel
From the "Outside the Wheel" Shrine, a straightforward path awaits. Along the way, collect all items and open every chest you encounter. Make sure to take the stairs near the Luojia Fragrant Vine, which lead to a snowy path. On your right, you’ll find an offering table and a bamboo fence. Break the fence and follow the newly revealed path until you reach a secluded snowfield inhabited by Frozen Corpses. Beyond them lies the Bottom Meditation Spot.
Pagoda Realm: Snow-Veiled Trail
Continue along the linear route to reach the "Snow-Veiled Trail" Shrine. Here, the path splits. Going left leads to the "Warding Temple" Shrine, while taking the right path brings you to a colossal pagoda built into the mountainside, where you can unlock the "Great Pagoda" Shrine. However, there's little to do there at this point.
Pagoda Realm: Warding Temple
After using the Warding Temple Shrine, climb the stairs to enter the temple, where you'll encounter the Macaque Chief for a second time. He’s attempting to break the sealing spell of Yuan Shoucheng, the wise elder who taught you how to absorb spirits back in Chapter 1. Defeat the Macaque Chief to snap him out of his trance, and Yuan Shoucheng will reward you with the Ring of Fire spell. While this spell might not seem useful immediately, it will prove handy for a future side quest.
When you’re done in the temple, exit through the left side and slide down into the next area. Here, you’ll overlook a mountainous landscape, which turns out to be the back of a giant turtle. Listen in on the conversation between Kang-Jin Star and a mysterious figure trapped between two giant cymbals. At the conclusion of the cutscene, a battle against Kang-Jin Star begins.
Pagoda Realm: Turtle Island
Compared to the dragon form, the fight against Kang-Jin Star in her humanoid form is more manageable. She’ll move around the arena while unleashing lightning attacks, but she’s easier to target and stagger in this form. At times, she will briefly transform into a spectral version of her dragon form, though her attacks remain easier to dodge than before. If you fall during this battle, don’t worry – you’ll respawn near Turtle Island, the next Keeper's Shrine.
3. Bitter Lake Walkthrough
Bitter Lake: Turtle Island
After defeating Kang-Jin Star, you'll be joined by Zhu Baijie, one of Wukong's loyal companions from the Journey to the West tale. He'll suggest meeting him at the head of Turtle Island, but before doing so, take a moment to explore the vast shell you're riding on. To the right of the Kang-Jin Star battleground, you'll find Cyan Loong.
If you’ve already obtained the Loong Scale, you’ll be able to fight Cyan Loong; otherwise, his statue will simply gaze out to sea. For details on obtaining the Loong Scale, refer to our Chapter 1 boss guide. Cyan Loong is a formidable foe, delivering powerful hits that drain large chunks of your health and unleashing lightning attacks with a wide radius. Timing your dodges is essential to avoid his strikes, but you can wear him down with Immobilize, A Flock of Many, and Red Tide combos. Wind Tamer is also effective at briefly stunning him.
Once Cyan Loong is defeated, head to the turtle's head where Zhu Baijie awaits. The turtle will then carry you to the next location.
Bitter Lake: North Shore of the Bitter Lake
This open, scenic area offers a pleasant view of the ocean. Here, Zhu Baijie accompanies you, providing assistance with various small tasks. Take a moment to stand still and listen to his ramblings for deeper insights into the game’s lore. From the "North Shore of the Bitter Lake" Shrine, head left along the coast to discover the skeleton of a massive serpent. It is here that Apramāṇa Bat descends for a battle. Use Rock Solid to parry its attacks, and follow up with strong counterattacks to take it down.
Afterwards, return to the Shrine and head up the sloped path where you’ll find a Treasure Hunter being attacked by two bat Guai. Save him and exhaust all of his dialogue, as this NPC becomes key later in unlocking the optional Green-Capped Martialist boss.
Continue heading north along the shore from the Shrine until you spot a hut. Nearby, in the water, is Chen Loong, a moody dragon who will challenge you upon approach. Though he has a few potent lightning-based attacks, Chen Loong is relatively easy to defeat, especially with Zhu Baijie helping. After his defeat, Chen Loong asks you to bring him medicine. Refer to our Chen Loong Questline Guide for detailed steps, but in summary, teleport back to the "Cellar" Shrine in Chapter 2, speak with Xu Dog, and deliver the Special-made Bone Strengthening Pellet to Chen Loong. In return, you’ll receive the Ruyi Scroll, which teleports you to the Painted Realm, home to Zodiac Village.
Bitter Lake: Precept Corridor
To wrap up the Bitter Lake section, return to the "North Shore of the Bitter Lake" Shrine and follow the trail of Frozen Corpses into a cave. Cross the bridge to unlock the "Precept Corridor" Shrine. Nearby, you’ll find The Statue Meditation Spot beside a large Buddha statue.
Head left and up the stairs where you’ll face a Red-Haired Yaksha. After defeating it, you’ll enter a temple courtyard, triggering a cutscene. You’ll need to locate four Buddha statues:
- The first is located in the courtyard left of the central pagoda.
- The second is down the left stairs and to the right, nestled in an alcove with a praying corpse.
- The third statue is in the opposite direction of the second, found outside beneath overhanging platforms and down a staircase.
- The fourth statue is through the red gates near the third. Follow the corridor all the way up the mountain to locate it (it’s a long climb).
After finding all four statues, the mountain pathway will unlock. Retrace your steps up the stairs leading to the fourth Buddha statue, and pass through the small gap at the top to access a new trail, eventually reaching the "Mindfulness Cliff" Shrine.
4. Zodiac Village Walkthrough
Zodiac Village: Village Entrance
Before moving on to the next area, let’s dive into Zodiac Village, a special pocket realm accessible after Chen Loong gives you the Ruyi Scroll. You can visit this unique village at any point in the game, but we’re covering it here for easy reference.
At the entrance of the village, you'll find the "Village Entrance" Keeper's Shrine. The village serves as a home for all the friendly merchants you’ve met during your journey. This includes Shen Monkey, Xu Dog, and Chen Loong, who helps you cultivate materials from seeds you’ve collected along the way.
There’s also a new NPC here: Yin Tiger, the village’s blacksmith. Not only does Yin Tiger upgrade your armor, but if you challenge him to a friendly duel and win, you'll unlock an extra curio slot.
Yin Tiger is one of the toughest opponents you’ve encountered so far. His powerful blade has an impressive range, making his attacks hard to dodge. If you’re struggling to defeat him, you can always return later when you’re stronger. While spells don’t work well against him, our Chapter 3 boss guide suggests waiting until you unlock the Spell Binder spell (found after fighting the Green-Capped Martialist later in this chapter) and using it to your advantage. Personally, I managed to beat him using a combination of Red Tides, A Flock of Many, and a fully upgraded smash from Wandering Wight’s head. He’s also vulnerable to Cloud Step surprise attacks.
Once you defeat Yin Tiger, you’ll earn the Ebon Flow Transformation, which allows you to take on Yin Tiger’s form in battle. This transformation is undoubtedly one of the best in the game, giving you a significant edge in future encounters.
5. Valley of Ecstasy Walkthrough
Valley of Ecstasy: Mindfulness Cliff
Continue ascending until you reach an open area where you'll face Non-White for the first time. He uses ice and poison attacks, and can block your strikes, but this fight is relatively easy compared to what you've endured to reach this point. Non-White will flee once his health is reduced by half.
After the battle, take note that you can drop down onto the fallen pillar past the tree in Non-White's arena to pick up a Fiery Gourd and the Skandha of Thought. Keep climbing until you encounter Non-White again. He's stronger now, but if you watch out for his poison-inflicting jump attacks, you shouldn't face too much difficulty. After defeating him, be sure to unlock The Track Meditation Spot before descending the snowy mountain to the next area.
Valley of Ecstasy: Forest of Felicity
The Forest of Felicity is a sprawling valley with plenty to explore. Starting from the "Forest of Felicity" Shrine, examine the corpse draped in a fox pelt. This kicks off the fox quest side story, which requires you to defeat Non-Void to complete. You'll be immediately transformed into a fox via the Snow Fox Brush and encouraged to head to the New Thunderclap Temple at the end of the forest. However, I recommend exploring the area first, as it offers several hours of gameplay. You can always transform back into the fox when needed.
There are two Yaoguai Chiefs you can now face within walking distance: Lang-Li-Guhh-Lang and Old Ginseng Guai. Lang-Li-Guhh-Lang, the frog boss from Chapter 3, is easier to find, located at the end of the shallow path to the left of the Forest of Felicity Shrine. Check out our boss guide for instructions on how to find and fight Old Ginseng Guai, as he's hidden within the forest's snowy trails.
Valley of Ecstasy: Brook of Bliss
To find the "Brook of Bliss" Shrine, take the path immediately to your right at the Forest of Felicity Shrine, cross the water, and go left. Keep moving forward until you find the shrine down a set of steps. Near the shrine, you'll find Non-Able by taking a right turn before reaching the shrine. Climb the slope to find a clearing filled with Frozen Corpses. Non-Able is kneeling amidst them, and combat will start as soon as you approach.
Non-Able has two forms: one with his hands bound and the other with them free. He's one of the tougher optional bosses in Chapter 3. While you can easily drain his first health bar with clones and heavy attacks, his second phase requires learning his moveset, particularly his three-hit fist combo and Qi-infused palm strikes. Defeating him is rewarding, as you'll receive the Non-Able Spirit, which greatly enhances your light attack combos.
Valley of Ecstasy: Towers of Karma
The "Towers of Karma" Shrine is near Old Ginseng Guai's boss arena. If you saved the Treasure Hunter back at North Shore of the Bitter Lake, you should hear his dialogue as you approach the shrine. Look for him freezing nearby, and use the Ring of Fire spell to warm him up. This is one of the few times the spell is more useful than Immobilize.
Valley of Ecstasy: Towers of Karma
The Melon Field is a secret Keeper's Shrine, accessible only if you've helped the Treasure Hunter twice. To get there, return to the Brook of Bliss Shrine, cross the bridge, and turn right. Head to the edge of the frozen lake, move toward the cliff, and carefully platform your way down to Melon Field.
As you enter the cave, you'll be attacked by Green-Capped Martialist, who is actually the true identity of the Treasure Hunter. His fighting style is unconventional, as he uses an ignitable chakram, spinning it around the battlefield. Rock Solid is useful here, but be cautious when activating your clones, as they’ll be ineffective when he disappears and his chakram starts spinning. After defeating him, you’ll receive the Spell Binder spell, which allows you to forego Mana for a temporary attack boost.
06. New Thunderclap Temple Walkthrough
Temple Entrance
You’ve finally arrived at the New Thunderclap Temple! After enduring the trials of Chapter 3, now an entire temple complex awaits your exploration. Though it’s not as vast as the forest you just conquered, it’s still a sizable area with its own set of challenges. This region is teeming with fierce enemies, including blind monks who hit hard and the terrifying multi-legged Clay Vajra. It’s a great place to level up, collect treasures, and refine your combat techniques. Be cautious, though—there are only two Keeper's Shrines here, meaning you’ll have to do a lot of backtracking if you fall in battle.
If you’re interested in completing the fox sidequest, your first goal should be tracking down Non-Void. You’ll find detailed instructions in our boss guide on how to locate and defeat him. When you reach the temple where he resides, use the Snow Fox Brush to transform into fox form and see his reaction before unleashing powerful attacks like A Flock of Many or Red Tides to punish him for his transgressions.
Another optional boss, Non-Pure, can be found by heading straight from the "Temple Entrance" Shrine to a large courtyard guarded by two Dark-faced Overlords (giant blue enemies). Enter the temple to your right to face Non-Pure, who wields a deadly polearm. Despite his range, I found Non-Void to be the tougher fight. Once Non-Pure is defeated, you can activate The Hall Meditation Spot.
Next on the list is Monk From The Sea, hidden in a distant corner of the temple. Starting from the entrance Shrine, head to the right, go up the ramps and steps, and pass through the large doorway to the next section. Continue northeast until you reach a platform where monks are training—look for a turtle statue as a landmark. Approach the plinth on the far end of the platform to summon Monk From The Sea. This boss is tricky due to his tentacle attacks, which give him incredible reach, and the nearby enemies that might join the fray if you haven't cleared the area. Defeating him rewards you with the Hoarfrost Transformation, allowing you to take his form.
Lastly, the friendly horse Guai Ma Tianba can be found near the Temple Entrance Shrine. After passing through the first temple and ascending the left stairs, take the next set of stairs on your left. Enter the temple ahead, which is filled with blind monks. Climb the stairs to the top floor and head left to find a wooden platform bordered by pillars. Ma Tianba will be waiting for you near one of the pillars, eager to talk. Meeting him in each chapter is crucial for unlocking his Transformation later in the game.
Mahavira Hall
Finally, you’ll reach the climactic battle in the New West. The "Mahavira Hall" Keeper’s Shrine is located up the stairs from where you encountered the two Dark-faced Overlords. When you’re ready, enter the uppermost temple building to face the final boss: Yellowbrow and the Macaque Chief.
This epic fight unfolds in multiple phases. First, you’ll take on Yellowbrow in a straightforward one-on-one duel. After defeating him, you’ll be trapped in his magic sack, where you must fight the Macaque Chief with help from Zhu Baijie. Eventually, you’ll transform into the Macaque Chief, navigating surreal platforms in Yellowbrow’s Buddhist realm before reaching the final arena.
In the final phase, Yellowbrow becomes much tougher, turning his body into gold to absorb your attacks. Use charged attacks or a smash from Wandering Wight to break his golden shield. If you’ve unlocked the Yin Tiger transformation or the Spell Binder ability, both are invaluable for dealing maximum damage. It might take several attempts, but once Yellowbrow falls, you’ll have completed the longest chapter of the game.
