Nier: Automata Hits an Incredible New Sales Milestone
Square Enix has just announced that Nier: Automata has officially sold over nine million copies worldwide! Released back in early 2017, this game is still winning hearts with its unique world, memorable characters, and that unforgettable soundtrack.
A follow-up to the 2010 title Nier and a spin-off from the Drakengard series, Nier: Automata made waves right from the start. It sold a massive 1.5 million copies within its first two months and racked up plenty of end-of-year awards, especially for its music and game design. Even years later, it’s still making an impact, with crossovers like the recent collaboration between Nier: Automata and Stellar Blade. Square Enix has confirmed that sales keep climbing, with over nine million copies shipped across physical and digital platforms.
To put things in perspective, back in February 2024, sales hit eight million, meaning the game has moved an additional one million units in just 10 months. The buzz around Nier: Automata shows no signs of slowing down, especially with the release of its anime series in January 2023 and even a quirky dinner show inspired by the game held in Tokyo in December.
Nier: Automata Breaks the Nine-Million Mark
Fans have been speculating about the future of the Nier series, especially since director Yoko Taro teased a new project in May 2024. However, some recent news has sparked concern—reports that key developers have left PlatinumGames. Still, with the ongoing success of Nier: Automata and its characters popping up in other games, the idea of a third installment feels more like a “when” than an “if.”
Interestingly, following the release of Stellar Blade in April 2024, Yoko Taro jokingly said the game was "better" than Nier: Automata, calling out its graphics and charm. In response, Stellar Blade’s director, Kim Hyung Tae, humbly dismissed the praise, saying his game "couldn't compete." While we might have to wait for a new Nier entry, Taro’s diverse portfolio continues to shine, with projects like his Voice of Cards trilogy showing just how creative he can get.
Nier: Automata’s legacy is clearly alive and well—here’s to hoping we’ll hear more exciting news from the series soon!
