How to Unlock Vault of Inceptus in Borderlands 4

Hi vault hunters! Let's get straight on with how you can get Vault of Inceptus in Borderlands 4. A warning, there will be some spoilers for this location ahead. I'm not going to give the surrounding areas too much away, but if you'd rather discover all of it blind, you may find it more suitable to avoid the location details. For the rest of you who are happy to farm, let's enjoy those legendaries weapons and items!
To get Vault of Inceptus in Borderlands 4, you need to collect three Key Fragments. Here's a quick map rundown to help you find them:
- Fragment One: Just around the corner from the start. From Idolatrous Souls, head out the door and it's immediately to your right.
- Fragment Two: A little north of the Launch Pad, high on the mountain ridge. For a landmark, there should be a Horace bot close by.
- Fragment Three: Down by the shore on the ground floor of that building in the water.
Once you have all the fragments, the easiest path to the vault the first time is to come out the back of Sadrist Plays, climb up the waterfall, and head to the peak of the mountain. Once you've been there once, you can just fast travel back straight.
Beating the Vault of Inceptus Challenge

Lastly, during your first time through, you're going to have to employ an echo comms device in order to construct the key. Then, get ready for battle. You're able to dash through the sector while dialogue is playing, but you'll have to clear three zones of enemies, including those annoying Vile enemies that have crystal shields. After the first clear, you can transport most of this on subsequent runs through jump pads straight to the boss room. It would have been awesome if we had a faster way, but hey, we manage!
The Boss Fight in Vault of Inceptus in Borderlands 4

Important tip: You DON'T need to be on Ultimate V to pick up the loot. It's absolutely fine to fight on a lower level like Ultimate I and it'll speed the farm up tremendously. There's no particular loot tucked behind the upper levels for this boss, so don't go out of your way!
And finally, boss mechanics:
- The Pull: When he tries to pull you towards him, just dash back to get out of the way.
- The Slam: He will leap and deliver a crippling shockwave; just step out of the red circle.
- Crit Spots: Notice when orbs appear around the arena. Blasting them as soon as possible! This makes him receive extra critical damage.
- Pod Stage: He'll trap himself eventually. The best method is to take the floating orbs that materialize, and they will let you float and shoot the pod. You can literally stand on the orbs as a temporary platform. Damage enough to shatter him out.
Loot Review: Is the Vault of Inceptus in Borderlands 4 Worth It?
Alright, here's the verdict. After raising this vault boss, the loot was a bit of a mixed bag. You'll have lots of purple items, but let's break down the only legendaries.
The Underwhelming Gear
First, the Extra Medium shield. Gimmick is that a nova happens if it shatters or gets filled. The one I was given doled out about 14k damage. The downside? Nova radius is painfully small. It's actually one of the less exciting legends that I've played. Recharge delay is also very long. I really can't personally endorse this one.
And then there's the RavenFire, which is a heavy ordinance launcher. The cool-down isn't bad, but damage was poor against regular mobs. It could be better on big things with a special build, but on my character it was just okay. It does look neat, though!
And then we have the Husky Friend, a Tediore shotgun that you toss out to reload. The catch? It consumes bullets like there's no tomorrow, and its perk recharges one bullet every 24 seconds, which is basically useless. You'll be constantly running low on bullets. Throw reload does decent damage, but it can't make up for it.
The True Reward: Vault of Inceptus Class Mods
Actual value from this farm seems to be class mods. These are actually nice:
- Vex (Electric Avatar): Great for minion builds, doing extra damage and giving damage mitigation based on active action skills.
- Rafa (Full Force): Great for grenade builds. With a grenade in your inventory, your action skill releases a base version of it. This can get ridiculously overpowered.
- Amon (Elementalist): Fantastic mod for fast stacking of affinity skills and having additional movement speed. The red text nod is the best!
- Harlowe (Reactor): Did not obtain one to drop, but it looks strong. Ensnaring foes provides stacks that result in extremely escalating gun damage, reload speed, and status damage over time.
Overall, aside from a couple of the guns and shields in the Vault of Inceptus in Borderlands 4, they are underwhelming for a vault boss, the class mods are definitely worth the farm. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! What has been your favorite drop from this vault?
