RX 8000: AMD’s New Graphics Cards Might Be Delayed Due to Poor Sales of Current Models

Published by M.D at October 1, 2024

Speculation surrounding AMD's upcoming RX 8000 series is heating up. Recently, the company confirmed one of the circulating rumors: there will be no high-end model in the RDNA 4-based graphics cards lineup. Now, additional news about the release date has surfaced, and it’s not particularly positive.

Previous rumors suggested that the RX 8000 series would be unveiled at the upcoming CES 2025, which is scheduled to take place from January 7 to January 10 in Las Vegas (USA). However, the YouTube channel “Moore’s Law is Dead,” citing internal sources, claims that the RX 8000 launch has been delayed.

It’s important to note, though, that Moore’s Law is Dead is known for having a mixed track record when it comes to leaks, so these details should be taken with a grain of caution.

According to the report, AMD's partners now expect the RX 8000 series to be postponed to the first quarter of 2025. The reason? The current RX 7000 series is still burdening retailers with an “oversupply” of RDNA 3 graphics cards. High-end models based on the Navi 31 chip, such as the Radeon RX 7900 XT, XTX, and GRE, have reportedly seen sluggish sales. In contrast, the entry-level and mid-range options from AMD seem to be in a more “acceptable” position regarding sales and stock.

While this situation presents a challenge for the RX 8000 launch, there’s a sliver of hope. The upcoming RDNA 4 graphics cards are expected to offer “significantly better price-to-performance ratios” than their predecessors. Therefore, it’s crucial for AMD and its partners to clear out the surplus of RX 7000 cards before launching the next generation, as having a powerful successor on the market could make it even harder to sell the remaining stock.

In terms of strategy, AMD’s planned release would likely occur after NVIDIA's RTX 5090 and 5080 launch but before the release of NVIDIA’s mid-tier GPUs, positioning them competitively in the market.

  • The RTX 5090 and 5080 are also anticipated to debut at CES 2025.
  • The timeline for mid-tier models like the RTX 5070 Ti is less clear, but based on previous release cycles, the earliest launch could be in the second quarter of 2025.
  • For context, the RTX 4090 was launched on October 12, 2022, while the RTX 4070 was released about six months later, on April 13, 2023.
  • Notably, the RTX 4070 Ti followed more quickly in January 2023, but this was simply a rebranded RTX 4080 after NVIDIA's unprecedented pullback.

Now we want to hear from you: Would you be willing to wait longer for AMD’s new RX 8000 GPUs if they deliver on the rumored “strong price-to-performance ratio”? What level of performance and price point would you expect from RDNA 4 to make it worth the wait? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
