Rumor: Fortnite Leak Hints at Potential Super Mario Crossover

Published by M.D at November 3, 2024
Fortnite, Super Mario Crossover

A new, high-profile leak suggests that a potential Fortnite Super Mario crossover is going to become a reality soon. Over the years, Fortnite has created its own distinct universe full of charming original characters like Peely and Fishstick. However, what truly constitutes the title is its incredible roster of crossovers, consistently introducing legendary figures from other franchises into the battle royale setting.

If a partnership with Super Mario were to be done, it would immediately add yet another legendary character to Fortnite's rapidly expanding repertoire of collaborations, and make the game world significantly more rich and interesting for its vast international fan base.
While this potential crossover generates hype, stay ahead of the curve by looking at the leaks and details for Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4.

  1. Fortnite's History of Major Gaming Collaborations
  2. The Super Mario Leak: Investigating the "MC Box" Asset
  3. The Nintendo Factor: IP Licensing Issues

Fortnite's History of Major Gaming Collaborations

Fortnite crossovers successfully bridge a broad universe of entertainment media, from high-budget movies, anime, TV shows, comics, music, and sports icons. In the world of gaming specifically, Fortnite has partnered with a fair number of major franchise brands, demonstrating a clear desire to partner with major IPs:

  • Street Fighter

  • Rocket League

  • League of Legends

  • Gears of War

  • Assassin's Creed

These successful crossovers have tended to introduce well-liked fan-favorite characters, such as Chun-Li, Jinx, and Ezio Auditore, to more exciting and fun situations for players across every platform.

The Super Mario Leak: Investigating the "MC Box" Asset

Long before Fortnite's long history of big-name collaborations, no widely recognized character has been included in the game universe—Super Mario being the sole exception. Not so, says a recent Fortnite leak, citing that a Super Mario collaboration may be imminent.

Details of the Cosmetic Leak

The news came to light just recently from a well-respected leaker, iFireMonkey, on Twitter, and it mentions a cosmetic vehicle asset that has been uncovered. The information strongly points to the following:

  • The asset is a cosmetic vehicle, which closely looks like the iconic Question Block from the Super Mario games.

  • As little information is available for now, the object is internally referred to as "MC Box," which immediately got fans speculating.

  • The community recognizes "MC Box" to likely refer to "Mario Coin Box," an obvious allusion to perhaps the most recognizable piece of Mario's attire.

In Mario's original games, Question Block is just one of many blocks players smash to receive a prize, usually a coin. This aspect could also be in some way a tongue-in-cheek tip of the hat to the classic Mario gameplay within the context of Fortnite's world.

Reception of the Community and Counterarguments

The majority of online comments about the leak were with massive excitement for the likelihood of Fortnite cross-overs with Super Mario, with some even proposing a limited edition mode based on the Mario Kart franchise. But other gamers had a more conservative perspective, theorizing the block asset to be no more than a placeholder for something entirely different, perhaps something relating to Rocket Racing.

But as Rocket Racing is not going to be getting major new updates anytime in the near future, it is unlikely that this leak has anything direct to do with that mode, which is half Rocket League and half Fortnite.

The Nintendo Factor: IP Licensing Issues

As always good practice, all leaks must be taken with some degree of skepticism because underlying information might change or might never even materialize. Another consideration of paramount importance is Nintendo's historically family-friendly lean, which would complicate in a significant way any potential crossover negotiation with Epic Games.

  • Epic Games has pursued deals with Nintendo collaborations before, but the outcome of such discussions is entirely unknown.

  • Nintendo is quite selective with their IPs, especially Mario, and generally avoids mature or cross-platform crossovers that might confuse their fan base or dilute the brand identity.

  • The final call is a matter of whether Nintendo will be open to allowing its most iconic mascot exist alongside in the context of a shooter universe, as tame as it may be in the case of Fortnite.

Time alone will actually reveal if this discovery is merely a junk file or if it actually does foreshadow an exciting and genuine Fortnite crossover with Super Mario. We can simply wait and see how this huge turn of events plays out.
