How to Start the Dragon Slayer Quest
Head to Bramblemead Valley and find a busted-up tower. That’s where you’ll meet the Wise Old Man, your quest-giver. He’ll send you on a mission to take down Velgar—but not before you build a basic shelter. Pro tip: this area’s low-threat, so it’s perfect for your base. Just goblins here, no crazy elite enemies.
Next, craft a bow by making a Spinning Wheel and Thread, then hunt deer for Antlers. Deliver them to the Wise Old Man so he can track Cathan, the rogue adventurer who went after Velgar solo.
Finding Cathan & Surviving the Swamp Vault
Follow the trail to the Whispering Swamp and locate the Dragonkin Vault—a glowing blue door deep in goblin-infested territory. Craft Antipoison Potions and stock up on Fortifying Crunchies before entering. Inside, you’ll battle Guardians and find a secret room with the Anti-Dragon Shield Recipe and Cathan’s trail.
Chasing Cathan to the Fractured Plains
Now head to the Fractured Plains (aka Gornfell). Build a Lodestone so you can teleport, then battle your way to the Obelisk. A boss fight against the Garou Thane awaits. Beat him from range with arrows—melee will get you clapped.
Afterward, meet Cathan’s Ghost near the Obelisk and get your next goal: crafting the Challenge Horn to summon Velgar.
Gathering Materials for the Challenge Horn
To craft the Horn, you’ll need:
Bloodwood Sap from a fortress in the Bloodblight Swamp
Dragon Tooth from the jaws of a skeleton in Stormtouched Highlands
Bronze Bars made from Tin and Copper Ore in Fractured Plains
Craft Tier 4 tools and armor before heading out, or the wilds will chew you up.
How to Summon & Beat Velgar
Place the Challenge Horn at the top of the Obelisk in Fractured Plains and call out Velgar. Watch out for:
Ground Slam + Spikes – Get behind cover or take big damage
Poison Breath – Buff with antipoison items to tank through
Poison Meteors – Keep moving and don’t stand in the puddles
Once you win, return to the Wise Old Man to claim the Tome of the Dragonslayer, Dragonblight Shield Blueprint, and of course, major bragging rights.
