An Expert’s Guide to Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025

Published by M.D at October 22, 2025

The annual celebration returns, and the Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025 activity is live in conjunction with the Ash and Iron big update. Guardians will notice some significant changes from previous years impacting all the way from armor cosmetics to event play. Understanding these mechanics will be crucial for progress optimization and getting the new loot.

  1. Catalyst and Masquerader's Helm Overhaul
  2. Haunted Alters of Sorrow Activity
  3. Special Event Modes and Loot Farming
  4. The Candy Economy and Event Bonuses

Catalyst and Masquerader's Helm Overhaul

The very first thing that all Guardians need to do is go visit Eva Levante in the Tower. She will begin the seasonal quest and reward you with the Masquerader's Helm initially. This item of armor has been extensively altered and is central to competing in the event.

1 Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025

The main distinctions in the new Masquerader's Helm are:

  • Full Piece of Armor: As opposed to previous years where the mask was a low-Power novelty item, this new helm is a full piece of armor featuring actual stat rolls.

  • Aesthetic Choice: You can add any previously or newly acquired Festival mask onto its look slot. As a quick tip, the free "Weasel Error" mask can be obtained from the Eververse store for a small amount of Glimmer.

The Game-Changing Mod Socket

The most important change is a unique Mod Socket located on the far right of the Helm's interface. This socket allows you to successfully add the Masquerader's Helm to any active build:

  • Set Bonus Preservation: When your active armor build relies on a critical four-piece set bonus (such as from a Solstice set), wearing the Masquerader's Helm would typically break that bonus.

  • Cost Reduction: By using the special mod socket, you can assign a mod that reduces the cost of your target set bonus by one. This essentially fools the system into believing that the Masquerader's Helm is included in that set, so you get to retain your four-piece perk when wearing a mask.

Note: There has been a temporary glitch observed preventing this mod from having its proper interaction with the Iron Banner set bonus. Be sure to test this out on your own build.

Up and masked now, you can go about doing activities to earn Candy, the festival's exclusive currency obtained randomly from dropped enemies killed during the event.

Haunted Alters of Sorrow Activity

The Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025 flagship activity is the Haunted Alters of Sorrow, the special version of the usual Moon activity. This is where the forced beginning for the seasonal quest is located and should first be done by everyone.

New Mechanics: Treats, Hats, and the Soft Lock

The three-stage core gameplay loop is:

  • Candy Deposit: Enemies hatch out of glowing patches. Killing the large yellow-bar enemies causes "Treats" to drop, which must be retrieved and deposited at the middle Sir Skulduggery spawn location.

  • Hat Buffs: All of the enemies in the game (in this as well as standard ones) are able to wear hats:

    • Orange Hats: Explode on impact, causing area damage.

    • Blue Hats: Can be shot off and must be collected by the Guardian. Wearing these provides damage (up to three times stacking) with a tangible benefit in combat.

  • Alignment Flip (Boss Phase): Once enough treats have been stored, the objective shifts. Guardians must break crystals and summon Hive magic to reroute the fire of a Shrieker at an immune Ogre, lowering its shield for the final wave.

Critical Warning: Soft Lock

Be extremely cautious during the last boss fight. To attack the boss first, players must activate five invoke-symbols, which get the Shriekers to attack the boss and drop its shield. When the Shriekers are in their open state, if the boss is attacked too quickly, they will close prematurely, with the result being a soft lock that will prevent the boss from dying and depriving rewards. The trick is to keep slowing the boss's initial damage burst throughout the fight until the boss's health naturally falls to the middle value, resetting the shields and allowing a second chance to call the magic.

Special Event Modes and Loot Farming

The Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025 provides two event-specific modes with guaranteed Festival loot drops, plus a method of farming loot in regular activities.

4 Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025

1. Haunted Alters of Sorrow

  • Main Feature: Treat deposits, Hat mechanics, and a boss with a soft-lock risk.

  • Main Objective: Bank treats and defeat the final boss, Sir Skulduggery.

  • Loot Drop: Delivers new Festival weapons and an improved Masquerader's Helm.

2. Red Rum-Bowl

  • Main Feature: A tournament-style Rumble PvP with a patrolling Headless One boss.

  • Main Objective: Injure the Headless One to drop Heavy Ammo and Motes, awarding points.

  • Loot Drop: Assured Festival loot upon completing the match.

Also, regular Portal activities include two unique event modifiers: "Ten Gallon Mode" (enemies wear hats) and "Trick or Treat" (killed enemies reward items that can contribute towards increasing your score).

Maximizing Your Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025 Loot

To maximize your earnings from farming outside of the special event modes, look for Bonus Drop icons on your Portal activity menu. By running through and completing different Portal options, you open up the drops, which guarantee additional Festival loot upon completion. It's normally well worth it to look for quests with multiple bonus drop symbols for optimal efficiency.

The Candy Economy and Event Bonuses

The Candy currency has a couple of uses: to buy gear, and to acquire temporary character bonuses.

  • Purchasing Loot: You can purchase Eerie Engrams from Eva Levante, which reward you Festival loot (e.g., a Tier V SMG).

  • Event Bonuses: This year features a new tab to buy global, stackable, temporary event bonuses. Strongest bonus rewards Devour (healing and grenade regeneration) when you collect Candy, which is extremely potent for builds that would otherwise be unable to get access to this ability.

A Note on Candy Pickup: Don't feel the need to rush into a wild frenzy to collect all the Candy drops; any Candy that you miss will be delivered automatically to your Postmaster for you to collect later. Keep the rush for when you possess the Devour bonus.

Will you prioritize the strong Devour bonus with your Candy, or will you rush to purchase the new weapon rolls as soon as possible during the Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost 2025?
