When you revisit her later in the game, you’ll learn that her daughter, Pavlena, has gone missing, triggering this quest. Here’s a step-by-step guide to finding Pavlena and making the right choices along the way.
Investigating Pavlena’s Disappearance
Start by searching Pavlena’s room. Look for a cap on a stool as an important clue. If you have lockpicking skills, open the chest inside. Otherwise, talk to Bozhena again and visit Troskowitz to speak with the Scribe or Bailiff. They’ll direct you to Woodcutter Dushka for more details.
At this point, you can also check with Innkeeper Betty, who may provide additional leads, but ultimately, your main target remains Dushka.
When you find Dushka, he’ll be searching for a man named Roman. Follow his voice to locate him. You can persuade him for more details if your Speech skill is at least 8. Alternatively, bribing him with Groschen works, but intimidation is not recommended.
Dushka will reveal that Pavlena and Roman were close. Now, head to Roman’s house. Lockpick the front door, or if you lack lockpicks, climb the ladder on the side of the house to enter through a different way. Search the kitchen for clues about Pavlena’s whereabouts.
Following the Blood Trail
Once you confirm that Pavlena was at Roman’s house, return to Dushka. He’ll suggest searching a stream nearby for more clues.
At the location, you’ll find blood stains leading to a body—it’s Roman, and a pig is feeding on his corpse. If you have Mutt, your loyal dog, he can help track the scent, but the blood trail is easy to follow even without him.
Speak to a nearby pig herder, who will reveal that a farmhand named Straw may have buried Roman’s body.
Confronting Straw
Find Straw behind a barn and challenge him. Be careful with your dialogue choices:
Speech or Charisma – Best options for extracting information about Pavlena’s location.
Intimidation (Dread Check) – Will result in Straw attacking you.
Once you get the information, you can:
- Kill Straw – Quickest option, but lowers your reputation.
- Turn him in to the Bailiff – He still dies, but your reputation increases.
Either way, you’ll now have Pavlena’s location marked on your map.
Rescuing Pavlena
At the designated location, look for a ladder hidden among rocks, guarded by a dog. You can avoid or kill the dog.
At the top, you’ll find Ota, a farmhand who has taken Pavlena hostage. You have two main choices:
Negotiate – Stay calm, introduce yourself as Henry, and mention Bozhena. Offer to put in a good word for Ota with Von Bergow. If you avoid provoking him, he will release Pavlena.
Failure to negotiate – If you anger Ota or mention Pavlena’s pregnancy, he will kill her.
If you succeed in saving her, Pavlena will kill Ota herself, and you should support her decision. Escort her home to complete this part of the quest.
Killing or Sparing Jakesh
Upon returning to Bozhena, she’ll demand revenge on Jakesh, the man who made her life miserable. You can:
Kill Jakesh – Boosts your reputation with Bozhena and Pavlena, but lowers it in Troskowitz. If anyone sees you, expect legal trouble.
Spare Jakesh – Convince him to make amends. This results in Bozhena returning to Troskowitz. She will offer you money, which you can either accept or leave for Pavlena.
Regardless of your decision, Pavlena is not a romanceable character, and the only item you’ll receive is a necklace she got from Roman.
